Winfrey is proof that the American dream may still be realized. She rose from the illegitimate
daughter of a Mississippi sharecropper to become one of the most prosperous and most
prominent women in the entertainment industry, overcoming poverty, parental neglect, sexual
assault, and racism. She redefined the talk show with her sheer force of personality and simply
being herself, and she is still the undisputed queen of daytime television. I don’t see myself as a

Background
Oprah Winfrey is one of several female superstars who overcame adversity at a young
age and rose to prominence or defied the odds to achieve. Oprah Winfrey was born to a single
mother in rural Mississippi in the United States in 1954. Throughout her early life, she felt
undesired and self-pity because she kept traveling from her grandparents’ house to her mother’s
4
house and then to her father’s house at 14. For years, Winfrey struggled with poverty and sexual
harassment before breaking into the media. Her early life tale logically contradicts the beginning
of a media mogul who later became the most important person in the United States and the
world’s richest black woman (Northouse, 2018).
Oprah’s media popularity, particularly as the host of the Oprah Winfrey Show, can be
attributed to her powerful voice, vulnerability, emotion, and compassion. When Oprah first
auditioned for a beauty pageant, she found her amazing voice and began her career in the media
as a radio newscaster while still in high school. Oprah went on to Tennessee State University to
study speech and performing arts. She worked as a reporter and co-anchor for a local television
show. Oprah was the first African American woman to work as a newscaster in Nashville. In
1984, Oprah became famous after taking over a local Chicago talk program and renaming it the
Oprah Winfrey Show.
Empathy is one of the qualities that has contributed to Oprah Winfrey’s success in the
media and telecoms industries. Winfrey has stated in numerous interviews that developing
compassion for others and learning to put yourself in their shoes has influenced her work and
success. Oprah’s challenging background instilled in her the values of empathy and social
interaction. She claims that being rejected and unloved is unpleasant and that when people show
compassion, it offers sufferers hope and boosts their self-esteem. Winfrey also learned how to
seize opportunities and put them to good use. Oprah recalls never squandering a chance to
improve or attain her objectives. After winning a public speaking competition, Oprah received a

college scholarship, propelling her to fame, fortune, and power (Burgess- Wilkerson, Fuller, &…
