Technology in Emergency Management
Part I
The embracing technologies have revolutionized how emergency management is done. In
the last five years, emergency managers have been using various emerging technologies in
different aspects of emergency management. This has made managing emergencies easier. One
of the emerging technologies is GIS. Understanding the specific location of the hazards helps to
know the impact of an emergency and the appropriate response to be used. GIS is an analytical
mapping technology that helps people to understand the location of hazards (Zhao & Liu, 2018).
The technology has improved the decision-making capabilities of emergency managers. It has
enabled them to understand the disasters possibilities in real-time. With this, the managers
develop better situational awareness of a disaster (Zhao & Liu, 2018). Emergency
communication app forms another important technology. Communication is very important in
emergency management. These apps help emergency managers to share information about
emergencies with the public better (Hu & Kapucu, 2016). Since many people use a smartphone,
this technology is very appropriate. The first responders use the technology to notify the
government emergency managers about the situation (Hu & Kapucu, 2016). For example, FEMA
has apps that enable people to share information about disasters. The app has many features
including the one that enables the smart device users to see the pictures of the situation and the
emergency management progress. More importantly, the app enables them to access reports
concerning emergency management. Thirdly, emergency managers are using aerial robotics to
manage emergencies. Using this technology, the emergency managers can get to places where
the responders cannot reach (Huggins & Prasanna, 2020). Thus, it helps to save many people’s
lives. Aerial robotics is the most impactful technology in emergency management.

Part II
Technology
Aerial robotics has been very impactful in emergency management. It has helped to break
many barriers in this field, and hence improve the efficiency of emergency management. This
technology encompasses the use of drones or aerial vehicles that are unmanned (Chen et al.,
2017). The aerial vehicles can be sent to the affected area where they collect information about
the destruction. They can also be used in offering humanitarian assistance, as well as rescue
efforts (Huggins & Prasanna, 2020). The technology has made emergency management easier
since the responders and emergency managers can do this remotely. In light of this, aerial
robotics has transformed many emergency management practices. As a result, many lives have
been saved using this technology.
Emergency Managers
This technology has improved the decision-making capabilities of emergency managers.
Information is critical in any decision-making. Aerial robotics has helped to get more
information about an emergency (Ozguven & Ozbay, 2015). Essentially, aerial robotics has
infrared cameras that are able to capture disaster scenes clearly. It can capture them even at
night. Additionally, robotics has a listening system (Huggins & Prasanna, 2020). Thus, the
technology collects visual-audio information. This increases the situational awareness of the
emergency managers. With this, the managers can make more effective emergency plans.
Importantly, emergency managers can get information about disasters that have happened in
unreachable areas. Emergency managers have been facing geographical barriers when
responding to emerge…
