The History and Social Context of Nursing
Description of Module: This module will provide the student with ways to identify factors in
nursing history that impact current practice and the roles of professional nurses as the student
transitions to the role of the baccalaureate nurse professional.
Module Objectives:
1. Identify the professional role of the nurse, as a clinician and nurse educator, and the
broad range of settings in which today’s registered nurses practice
2. Discuss emerging practice opportunities for nurses
3. Identify historical, as well as social, political, and economic influences, on the
development of professional nursing practice
4. Distinguish characteristics and values of nurse professionals
5. Identify influences on the development of professional nursing in the United States
6. Utilize foundational and legal documents leading professional nursing practice

a. View Orientation to Discussion video provided in Module 3 Content area. This video
will be very helpful in guiding the student through the following assignment, and all
of their future discussion assignments.
b. View Navigate Brightspace Learning Environment – Engage in Discussions Video.
This tutorial shows how to navigate the Discussions tool in NURS 300.
c. Post a discussion response to one of the questions listed below. Be sure to follow
the discussion rubric guidelines found in the NURS 300 syllabus, Appendix B. I will
also provide the rubric below. Please note the due dates for postings on the NURS
300 calendar. It is important to know that as the faculty member, I am sensitive to
our student’s busy schedules with family, work, and school. There are due dates for
postings, created to allow productive discussions between students in this course.
If students ever feel that meeting a due date creates a significant challenge for
them, please let the faculty member know and we will discuss an alternative plan. If
students do not contact the faculty member ahead of the due date to arrange
alternative plans, the grading criteria for late submissions will be followed.)
d. After the student completes their initial posting, and has responded to at least two
other students, the student will self-grade their discussion using the discussion quiz,
located within NURS 300 Module 3 content area. The student’s self grade will be
reviewed by the course instructor for accuracy, and adjusted as needed.

Enjoy this first discussion assignment in NURS 300!
Again, as noted in the first two weeks of NURS 300, there will be an option for students to
collaborate with a team of students as they work on a major assignment later on in this course.
Students will be given the opportunity to choose a team of individuals to work with (2-5 team
members allowed). This is another opportunity to start to get to know other as students in the
course through interactions in Discussion 1. Next week, the opportunity to start developing
teams will be available, if so desired.

Please note: Initial assigned discussion posts are due by 11:59 PM on Thursday of the assignment week
and a response to at least two other people is due by 11:59 PM on the following Sunday. Any discussion
