Running head: A WRINKLE IN TIME MOVIE REVIEW
1
Review — Write your individual critique and rate your film. You must discuss each of
the following categories:
Genre:
What genre does this film fit into? Is it an Action film? Drama? Western? Comedy?
Romantic Comedy? Did it conform to the norms of this genre?
Actors and Actresses:
Figure out who was part of the leading cast and the supporting one. Who were the most
memorable characters? What did you think about his or her performance? Was this a
role they have played before or something new? Direction and Camera Work:
In your opinion, what were the most meaningful elements of style used to convey the
narrative/meaning of the film: the camera (angles and movement), lighting (high-key,
low-key, star), sound, editing (cut, fade, dissolve, iris-in, iris-out, point of view, 180-rule,
narrative rule)? Or a combination of two?
*Be sure to have a firm grasp of these definitions from Chapter 3 and defend your
opinion.
Writing:
What did you think of the plot? Was the narrative formulaic or did it stretch your
opinion of what could fit into this genre?
Production:
Was this film a safe bet for the studio? Take into account what the genre was, who the
actors and were, the director, the studio, and the writers.
If you want to do some more research about what other films they were in a great
resource is the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com). What did you think of the
film? Have you seen any other films with these actors? With this director? Do you think
there was any underlying symbolism?
Theater:
What did you think of the theater? Was it a big multi-plex or a smaller independent one?
Was it crowded? Did people vocally interact with the film?
Hollywood typecast :
Why do you think your film fits into this genre? What characteristics/techniques does it
use to fit this style? Think back to your reading and our previous discussions.
Taking into account everything you have just outlined and get out your stars and attach
as many as you deem necessary to your film. Describe your evaluation in a 350–400
word review incorporating each of the categories outlined above (ie. genre, actors and
actresses…) Each partner is required to write an independent review–this is not a
group collaboration.
Write an additional 200 words to complete this assignment: Pick from the following list
of newspapers and film journals to find 2 additional reviews of your film. Summarize
what the other critic thought of your film and weave this into your discussion. Has this
changed your own star-rated evaluation?

A Wrinkle in Time Review
A Wrinkle in Time move is a science fantasy adventure film. The movie conforms to
the genre since there is the use of characters that are celestial beings (Mrs. Whatist, Mrs.
Who, and Mrs. Which) who are very old and space travel. In the movie, there is also mention
of a Dark Thing known as the IT that has engulfed the earth and the mention of a planets
Uriel and Camazotz. The characters in the movie also fight a super being to save Murry
(www.youtube.com). In the movie, the leading actors are Oprah Winfrey who is acting as
Mrs. Which, Reese Witherspoon as Mrs. Whatsit, Mindy Kaling as Mrs. Who, Storm Reid as
Meg and Deric McCabe as Charles Wallace, Meg’s brother. The supporting cast is made up
of Levi Miller as Calvin, Chris Pine as Mr. Murry, Gugu Mbatha as Mrs. Murry and several
others. The most memorable character in the movie is played by Storm Reid as Meg Murry
as she is able to bring out her character as an intelligent girl. This is a new role for her even
though she has acted in other movies before but with smaller roles.
The camerawork in the movie uses a lot of close-ups even though the characters are
traveling through a world of fantasy. There is also a lot more focus on the faces of the actors
whereas there could have been some focus on what the actors are seeing. angles and
movement of the camera using the 180-degree rule. There is also the use of visual effects to
make some scenes appear to be more in a fantasy world. The plot of the movie is well
written, and the storyline is also well developed. It is also easy to understand the role of each
of the characters in the movie from the main actors to the supporting ones. Since the movie
is based on a book of the same name, there isn’t so much of a difference. The film was a safe
bet for the studio. Especially, the studio has had success in making similar movies. The writer
that was chosen had experience in writing great scripts as she was the one who wrote the
script for frozen. The actors in the movie have won awards in their previous performances.
The director has worked previously on a movie Selma with Oprah Winfrey but has not

worked with the rest. The movie was the first ever one to be directed by a woman of color
with a budget of $100 million. The theatre that I watched the movie was a smaller
independent one and it was almost full except for e few seats before the movie began. The
people in the theatre did not vocally interact with the movie.
Chicago Reader and New York Times Review
The critic is of the opinion that the director of the movie did not bring out the
childlike wonder and in the movie since even the child actors in the movie are seen to be
struggling with their characters. An example is Meg who appears to be too confident when
she is expected to have self-esteem issues while she also does not seem amazed at the
wonders of the world they travel to in search of her father. The adults in the movie do not
also have a grasp of their characters, for example, Mrs. Whatist who is charming in the book
is not as charming in the movie. (www.chicagoreader.com). The reunion between the father
and the children is also very flat showing how the director failed to bring out the moment in
the book. In the New York Times review, the critic is of the opinion that the movie failed to
capture the magical world of children in the movie (www.nytimes.com). The special effects
used in the movie are wild even though, but the characters are not enthusiastic as they should
be. Some scenes are over too soon before the viewer can appreciate them for example when
the IT power starts to mess with Meg’s Mind.
