Abortion
Introduction
Abortion is a very contentious topic of discussion and it has been since the concept
was first known. Times have greatly changed but there is still debate and disputes
surrounding the topic. Abortion refers to the process of ending or terminating a pregnancy so
that a child is not born. There are various reasons why people might seek abortion services.
One is that the pregnancy might have been a by-product of a horrific sexual encounter where
the person was raped, the pregnancy was unplanned and the parents are not in any position to
financially raise a baby. Another reason is that the person may have other things that they
want to focus on like their careers and a baby will draw attention away from that. According
to Jerman et al. (2016), it is a critical component to comprehensive reproductive health and it
is very common in the US. The debate, by far has been based on religious and spiritual
morals with many stating that abortion is a sin and it is equivalent to murder. The moral
debate surrounding abortion will not end anytime soon as people with varying opinions think
that they are all right for having their reasons either in support of or against the practice.
Ethical Egoist
According to Nobis (2020), ethical egoism is an ethical theory that posits that people
are morally obligated to do things in their own best or self-interests. It states that people
should or rather ought to be selfish and do what is best for them. In other words, people
should only perform specific actions or make specific choices if and only when these
decisions and choices maximize their self-interest.
In this instance, and with regard to this topic, an ethical egoist might say that abortion
is acceptable or preferred when it suits the interests of the mother. The ethical egoist would
be in support of the side that stands to benefit more, in this case, the person who is pregnant.
