Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
Sexual harassment is an unfortunate reality in many workplaces. Employees may
experience two types: quid pro quo sexual harassment and/or hostile environment sexual
harassment. Quid pro quo sexual harassment refers to situations where authority figures offer a
desired result in exchange for a sexual act (“Quid Pro Quo,” n.d.). For example, quid pro quo
sexual harassment occurs when a manager offers a subordinate a promotion for a sexual favor.
The “casting couch” is an unfortunate reference to quid pro quo sexual harassment where the
director asks for sexual favors in exchange for casting the harrassed individual in a film or show.
In some cases, the victims’ career depends on accepting the offer.
Hostile environment sexual harassment refers to the creation of an offensive and hostile
environment due to sexual harassment that negatively impacts the victim’s work performance
and psychological health. The environment is associated with consistent unwanted touches,
unwanted advances, gender jokes, looks-related remarks, showcasing sexual material, and
