Lesson 6
Early Renaissance Art
Definition and examples of the Northern Renaissance style (period, area, origin of the
concept, main characteristics and innovations, how to recognize it, compass point)
The Italian Renaissance existed by the Northern Renaissance, an arty effort that seized
room in Northern Europe in the 15th and 16th times. The Northern Renaissance style can be
thought of as the incredibly unique outcome of the fusion of Late Gothic art, modern
concepts of observation, and Reformation ideology. The world was portrayed with a
rigorous naturalism that bordered on the spiritual at this time because the European
mentality in the North perceived their Christian God in every part of it (MacLennan, H.,
2018).
Case studies: the Annunciation Tryptic (Merode Alterpiece) + Arnolfini Portraits by
Van Eyck
The Annunciation Triptych was intended as a personal devotional item. Although
experts have provided intricate explanations for its iconography, the average educated
person of the period must have recognized the significance of the images. The Virgin is the
main subject of the central panel. One of Campin’s most well-known religious works, the
Merode Altarpiece is considered one of the finest Northern European Renaissance works.
Early 15th-century Netherlandish painting adopted a far more naturalistic approach and
marked a major departure from the courtly International Gothic style (Minott, C. I., 1969).
The most well-known aspect of Arnolfini Portrait is Jan van Eyck’s exquisitely detailed
representation of commonplace items. This can be seen in everything from the dog’s fur’s
incredibly tiny lines to the flawless brushwork, which results in realistic picture. He
accomplishes this, among other things, by utilizing light and shadow (Elkins, J., 1991).

Practice with example of oil painting and tempera painting
Painting technique known as tempera involves using pigment that is ground in a watersoluble media. Dry pigments are tempered with a binding and adhesive medium to make
them useable. Greater flexibility, thicker and richer color, layering, and a wider range from
bright to dark are some of the characteristics of oil for painting images. However, the
procedure takes longer since one layer of paint must cure before another is applied. Since
tempera is more transparent than oil and holds less color, light can pass through it and
bounce off the gesso’s white surface underneath. Egg tempera also has the advantage of
being light-resistant and having colors that do not age or darken like oil paintings do (Van
Loon, A., Noble, P., & Burnstock, A., 2020).

Definition and examples of the Southern Renaissance style (period, area, origin of the
concept, main characteristics and innovations, how to recognize it, glossary, compass
point)
Renaissance art in the South started in the 1300s, whereas it started in the North in the
1500s. During the Renaissance, Northern artists mostly used their artwork to convey
religious lessons. In contrast, the Southern Renaissance focused on using art to illustrate
Greek and Roman mythology. Oil paintings on panels were a specialty of the Northern
Renaissance artists. During the Renaissance, the Southern part of Europe focused more on
the advancement of various fields, including literature, architecture, politics, and religion
(Hale, J. R, 2008).

Case studies: Brunelleschi’s Dome + Donatello’s David + Masaccio’s Trinity
Brunelleschi’s main contribution to architecture was the Dome’s lack of a supporting
framework. The Dome is made up of two unique domes: an internal one that is more than
two metres thick, has a deeper angle than the other, is built of massive arches connected by
ribs, and is construc…
