In this activity I want you to apply some of the formalistic elements we learned
from the previous Module. Look at the image below and discuss what you see
using formalistic analysis. Also, does the image evoke any emotional response, if
so what and how do you think that emotion is being evoked?
Module 5 Overview
In this Module we are continuing our exploration of two-dimensional visual art. We are
looking at art from the 19th and 20th centuries and how artists explored new ways of
telling their stories through visual art — partly by experimenting with the idea of moving
away from art as attempting to create the illusion of reality to art expressing emotion,
ideas, feelings, and impressions in two-dimensional art.
You will watch two videos of artists along with readings from the text.
This Module includes:
Lesson 5.1 Reading Chapter 5 in Janaro
Lesson 5.2 The Power of Art: Van Gogh
Lesson 5.3 The Power of Art: Rothko
Lesson 5.1 Reading Chapter 5 in Janaro
We are still reading from Chapter 5 in the Janaro, Art of Being Human text.
Read p 122 (starting with Rebellion Against Perfect Likeness) thru p. 139 (stopping at
the Superrealism heading).
Lesson 5.2 The Power of Art: Van Gogh
This video is just under an hour long. It is part of a BBC series by art historian Simon
Schama. Schama is an excellent story teller in that he frames the artists life by talking
about a significant work by the artist.
The video covers the life of Vincent Van Gogh.
Please be aware, there is some profanity and there are some, potentially, disturbing
portrayals of this tortured artist’s descent into madness.

Lesson 5.3 The Power of Art: Rothko
This video is just under an hour long. It is part of a BBC series by art historian Simon
Schama. Schama is an excellent story teller in that he frames the artists life by talking
about a significant work by the artist.
The video covers the life of Mark Rothko.
Please be aware, there is some profanity.

Activity 5.2 2-D Visual Art
In the 19th and twentieth century many artists experimented with artistic style
and technique and rebelled against “traditional” attempts to create the “illusion
of reality” in art.
In a short essay of no less than 300 words, discuss examples of how this rebellion
manifested its in some artists’ work? You may discuss Van Gogh and/or Rothko
but I would like to see some reference to other artists describe from the reading as
well.
